John in Ghana has been helping new parents Haddi and Zenabu with their baby Vicky, who was born on January 31st. They are very poor and we have been providing what help we can as Vicky makes it through her first few months of life.
Vicky has had some health problems and we were finally able to get her in to the doctor yesterday. John’s English is not every good and medical things are hard to describe anyway but I believe her navel had not healed well from birth. I think it had become infected. I am not entirely sure. (John would have sent me a photo of it if I had let him but I didn’t want to see. I have a weak stomach for such things.)
This morning when I woke I got a message from John asking to send another 600 cedis (about 55 dollars) so that they could pay off the doctor and go home. (In Ghana you have to pay on the spot or they simply hold you there until you do.) So I sent the money and they are all on their way home.
John told me the baby had been given an injection and some medicines. The doctor said she had infant reflux. I am not sure how this relates to the navel problem but the poor thing was vomiting after she ate.
So hopefully everything is all settled and Vicky will be well.
So that is good news.
I apologize for writing so many Ghana stories. I just thought people who had read the earlier diaries might want to know.
