The Texas legislature apparently is competing with the Florida legislature for Worst Ideas Ever. I think this one puts them firmly in the lead: hey, let’s turn our school kids into combat medics so they’ll be prepared when the next guy with an AR15 shows up! (House Bill 1147, if you want to check it out.) All their schools to be equipped with tourniquets, chest seals, etc., and training provided to staff and to CHILDREN third grade and up. EIGHT-YEAR-OLDS.
So your little kid is supposed to be prepared, when their friend has just been shot and is gushing blood, to figure out when it is safe to stand up and run to the “bleeding control station”, know what equipment to grab, open the packages, put on latex free gloves, and apply this to a screaming, possibly dying, best friend. Because better we pretend our kids are capable of doing what a full trauma team in a hospital ER struggles to accomplish, than pass any meaningful gun control legislation.
