Freshly opened Black cottonwood leaves, April 16

You remember the Robert Frost poem. I think of it every year when spring foliage is just emerging. First couple of lines:

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Cottonwoods are golden in April here in the Pacific Northwest, and their fragrance is quite heavenly, the buds covered with a honey-scented resin that can be made into a fragrant salve that has medicinal qualities.

The native Garry oak leaves are still golden, as they unfurl.

That ephemeral golden stage has passed now for most trees, shrubs and herbs but in the right light there’s still a goldness to many.

Snowberry, April 25

Big-leaf Maple, April 28

Pacific Willow, April 18

Bracken fern, April 28

As spring settles in, foliage turns deep green. In the earlier stage,

Young leaflets' chloroplasts -- the part of the plant that contains the green pigment chlorophyll -- are still developing, so the leaves tend to be lighter. New leaves are also thinner, with fewer waxy or tough layers that can darken the green color. www.insidescience.org/...

The cottonwoods are turning green now we’re into May.

Nothing gold can stay.
