This museum is located on the University of Alabama campus in one of the science buildings. It’s not very big, but it has a wide and varied collection. Nearly all of the specimens were found and recovered by University paleontologists and students.

Some photos from a visit.

For those who don't know, I live in a converted campervan and travel around the country, posting photo diaries of places that I visit. I am currently in Alabama.

The museum

Inside the museum

Basilosaurus. An ancient whale. This was found in Alabama and is now the State Fossil.

300 million year old Alethopteris ferns, found in Pennsylvania

Mosasaur, found in Alabama in 2002. It is one of the most complete Mosasaur skeletons known.

Sea Turtle from the Cretaceous period.

These marks come from marine worms that attached themselves to the shell

And this is a bite mark left by a predator—likely a Mosasaur

Theropod dinosaur track, found in the Jurassic-age Morrison Formation in Colorado

A Sirenid manatee relative, from the Oligocene period. Found in South Carolina.

Mammoth skull found in Wisconsin

The Demopolis Mastodon, found in Alabama. It comes from a juvenile.

Geological specimens on display

A fulgurite—a tube of melted and fused sand that forms when lightning strikes the ground. From Florida.
