Dream Defenders Ask for Meeting With DeSantis, Get Arrested Instead - DeSantis Runs and Hides [1]

As I type, 13 of my friends who have been sitting in Governor DeSantis’s office all day trying to get a meeting with him are being arrested. Florida State Representative Angie Nixon is live-tweeting it. From what I can see, it looks like the LEOs outnumber the protesters by at least 2-1.

10 years ago, the Florida Dream Defenders occupied the Florida State capitol building for several days in protest of the unjust verdict where George Zimmerman was allowed to roam free instead of serving time for murdering Trayvon Martin. I was there with them, and I had never been so proud of any group of young people in my life.

I was with them earlier today at the capitol, and I’m still proud as I’ve ever been. It was quite a lively, loved-filled crowd. We loudly and proudly sang and chanted many versions of the message that, yes, we’re awake, and no, we won’t be banned. Since about noon, my 13 friends have been trying to get a meeting with DeSantis to convey their objections for his trying to ban everything in Florida, from books to Black voting to women’s reproductive rights to LGBTQ people. But DeSantis is nowhere to be seen and the Florida legislature just passed a bill that his travel plans no longer have to be made public. So the question is Where’s Ron?

10 years ago, the Dream Defenders were allowed to stay in the Capitol for days exercising their first amendment rights. This time they’re being arrested. What’s the difference? Your guess is as good as mine, but while DeSantis shares equally many fascist tendencies with our previous governor, Rick Scott, he far outpaces him in cowardice and evasion.

This is the chicken-shit governor of Florida that wants to be president.
