This was covered today by the Oregonian (though with subtly biased phrasing IMO, which I bolded below):
https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2023/05/house-votes-to-approve-divisive-reproductive-and-gender-affirming-care-bill.html House votes to approve divisive reproductive and gender-affirming care bill A slew of Oregon House Republican delay tactics couldn’t stop a near-party-line vote Monday moving forward a bill that would guarantee and expand reproductive and gender-affirming health care. House Bill 2002, a sprawling measure that would expand access to abortion in rural counties, protect doctors who provide them from prosecution under out-of-state laws and mandate insurance coverage for gender-affirming care, is among Oregon Democrats’ top priorities this session. The measure has been presented as a response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling last year overturning Roe v. Wade and the growing number of anti-abortion and anti-transcare legislation in conservative states.
The article goes on to say that the GOP tried all their usual tricks, but since the Dems have a majority and last year got tired of the walk-outs and passed a penalty for those, the delay tactics didn’t work. Of course, it still has to pass the Senate.
After a full bill reading that lasted two hours and after about six hours of debate, the bill passed 36-23, with one Republican joining in favor of the bill and one abstaining. The long day on the House floor likely presages equally contentious deliberations in the Senate.
Further down in the article, it gives examples of the ways GOP was pandering to their base (and pushing limits, of course):
Before floor debate, representatives are able take a minute to honor guests visiting the statehouse, and several used the time Monday to thank their mothers for choosing to not abort them. Rep. Paul Holvey, D-Eugene, admonished representatives for giving “courtesies” to people who weren’t physically in the building, then allowed them to resume after a brief deliberation.
Anyway, I’m glad this has moved forward, and it’s worth reading the article, though I have issues with the “objective” tone that doesn’t call out GOP for their lies and bigotry. And I won’t be around as much to answer comments, but thanks for reading!
