The Energy Information Administration has released electricity data through February 2023. The next two images show the data charted and tabulated. The really notable part is the reduction in coal burning as a percentage and increase in wind generation. January and February are usually much higher for burning coal (the lesser of the two peaks) so this reduction is unusual. Coal burning has plateaued for the last three years so this reduction is welcome.

I plan to rework these charts to show rolling twelve month periods and I think that will be better information and comparisons. Comparing two months of the current year to all twelve months of previous years seems inadequate.

The future of generating capacity continues to improve for transition. The first image is for planned retirements and the second is planned additions for the next 12 months.

The retirements are for generating units and locations can contain multiple units. Retirements are mostly coal fired units with some natural gas units. Notable is that some of these units are huge and most are currently active year round. This means nice reductions in coal burning for the next year.

For the additions solar installations are spreading across the US (very happy thing). Seeing the Atlantic South gaining solar and increases in the upper Midwest is amazing. Just look at the activity in Indiana and Ohio for some good news — conservative states are getting solar energy fever. The grey dots in California and Texas are mostly battery storage installations and I’m very curious about how well these installations will perform.

Sadder is the lack of activity in Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada (with the exception of Las Vegas). Tell the conservatives that they are wasting sunshine! I may have written about this before but our first production scale offshore wind facility is that green dot next to Martha’s Vineyard and should be a big help to Massachusetts and Rhode Island to generate green electricity.
