The carnage in this war should come as no surprise to anyone, but these numbers are still shocking.
WASHINGTON, May 1 (Reuters) - The White House on Monday estimated that Russia's military has suffered 100,000 casualties in the last five months in fighting against Ukraine in the Bakhmut region. White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters the figure, based on U.S. intelligence estimates, included more than 20,000 dead, half of them from the Wagner mercenary group, which includes convicts released from prison to join the fighting.
There is some confusion about those numbers, however. It seems those numbers include the entire front, not just Bakhmut. But it is safe to say the majority of those casualties will have come from the Bakhmut area..
x The 4:1 WIA:KIA ratio was a good indication that the original figure was not specifically for Bakhmut. Most Wagner casualties in Bakhmut are convicts, and, given how they are employed and their lower medevac priority, they are less likely to survive wounds than Russian soldiers.

Prisoner recruitment continues, but most of those new “soldiers” end up as cannon fodder.
x 2/ According to Olga Romanova, the head of the 'Russia Behind Bars' human rights group – which campaigns for prisoners' rights – convicts are still being recruited on a huge scale to fight, despite the Wagner Group no longer being allowed to recruit from Russian jails. — ChrisO_wiki (@ChrisO_wiki) May 1, 2023
x 4/ Hundreds of people are said to have been taken simultaneously from prison colonies across Russia – a total of about 10,000 people just in the month of April. The convicts are required to sign a document agreeing not to disclose any information about their recruitment. — ChrisO_wiki (@ChrisO_wiki) May 1, 2023
Apparently Wagner is doing a poor job of shooting “soldiers” who try to surrender. There is even a financial incentive, as well as a stay-alive incentive, for prisoner recruits to wave the white flag.
x 6/ Of these, 77% were listed as combat and non-combat casualties (i.e. including escaped and surrendered prisoners). Those captured by Ukraine are recorded as killed and compensation is paid to their wives. "Prigozhin is afraid of the surrender statistics," says Romanova. — ChrisO_wiki (@ChrisO_wiki) May 1, 2023
