Dr. Anthony Fauci kept his cool during an essentially hostile Interview in the NY Times Magazine. If anything he was too polite, especially as to TFG’s primary responsibility for the deaths of hundreds of thousands. For example, he says:
Something clearly went wrong. And I don’t know exactly what it was. But the reason we know it went wrong is that we are the richest country in the world, and on a per-capita basis we’ve done worse than virtually all other countries.
And the author uses “something clearly went wrong” as the headline. Fauci’s attempt at a nuanced response and reluctance to blame Trump and the R’s will now be transmuted to “Fauci admits guilt.”
I suspect Fauci is reluctant to blame Trump because he is already getting thousands of death threats and wants to avoid more.
The virus was like nothing before, and yet the author cites early mistakes (admitted by Fauci) as though Fauci should have known everything about the virus in February 2000, even though many critical facts about transmission were not known until much later. And Fauci surely couldn’t foresee the extent of the COVID Republican death cult that emerged.
On the market v. lab leak issue, Fauci says we don’t know for sure, but evidence so far points to the market. Yet the author continues to press on the lab leak, even to the extent of criticizing Fauci’s answer to one of Rand Paul’s hectoring questions.
The author even engages in both-siderism, contesting Fauci’s statement that he was attacked primarily the right by saying the “left” criticized him too. Yeah, maybe a few, but it’s dwarfed by the cascade of abuse and death threats from the right.
This was a bad faith interview. If I were Fauci, I would enjoy my retirement and not open the door to this kind of crap.
[Update] The site won’t let me make or recommend comments, so I’ll try to address two here:
1. Though I realize the authors don’t write headlines, in this case, the headline was in keeping with the nasty tone of the story.
2. I wrote Trump had primary, not sole responsibility. From lying about the danger in Feb and March to Hydroxychlroquine to rejecting testing, his culpability was continuing and lethal.
