Don't mess with Library Cat

I didn’t realize it was time for another bout of religious wars here, but here it is again. People are consistently allowed to make broad sweeping statements based on nothing except their own sense of superiority. They claim to be fact based, yet use the actions of subgroups to represent the actions of entire groups. Until such time that we limit our arguments to fact based standards as prescribed in the Rules of the Road these acrimonious, community dividing brawls will continue. I find it personally distressing that a community that prides itself of reason and facts allows such fact free diatribes to happen every few months like clockwork.

This is a link the Daily Kos Rules of the Road.

Here are a few I’m highlighting in case people don’t want to click through to something we all should have read. Underlining is my own.

Remember that there are real people on the other end of your communication, along with thousands of others who may read but never reply. Respect the diversity in our community of users, readers, and allies.

Value the norms of a “reality-based community.” Support your arguments with links to supporting documents and original source materials. Such original sources should be credible news and information sites.

with links to supporting documents and original source materials. Such original sources should be credible news and information sites. Strive to be accurate. Use trustworthy sources. If a claim seems especially exciting, but isn’t widely reported, take a moment to check your work and verify the facts you can. And if you find out you made a mistake, own it and correct it. If commenters are skeptical, take their concerns seriously. Don’t be a part of spreading Fake News or conspiracy theory.

Use trustworthy sources. If a claim seems especially exciting, but isn’t widely reported, take a moment to check your work and verify the facts you can. And if you find out you made a mistake, own it and correct it. Don’t be a part of spreading Fake News or conspiracy theory. Fight hard but fight fair. Write an argument, not an attack . Remember, other people are just as passionate, committed, and ornery as you are. That’s supposed to be an advantage for us, right? Democrats boast about having a big tent. Learn from those who oppose you; let their challenges help you formulate your positions more clearly and draw upon better evidence.

DO NOT Use bigoted language in stories or comments. This includes but is not limited to slurs, stereotypes, and demeaning insults regarding race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexuality, religion , age, class, locality, country or culture of origin, physical appearance, and physical or mental ability. Discriminatory speech is incompatible with the values of this organization and is subject to administrative action, including banning. (See also DO #13, Recognize and avoid microaggressions.)

Discriminatory speech is incompatible with the values of this organization and is subject to administrative action, including banning. (See also DO #13, Recognize and avoid microaggressions.) Be a Jerk. The long version is Don’t Be a Jerk (DBAJ); the original version is Don’t Be a Dick (DBAD) and a common variant is Don’t Be an Ass[hole] (DBAA). We all know it when we see it. Or at least we like to think we do–that’s what these detailed Rules of the Road are intended to clarify.

I consistently read comment after comment being highly disrespectful of other people’s religions. Particularly loathsome are the comments telling ME what my religion is about when the it is clear the commenter has no clue what they are talking about. In general, those commenters simply double down and refuse to acknowledge they know nothing about something I have a Masters degree in and participate in on a regular basis. But their 5 minutes of thinking about things they have never participated in is supposed to override my lived experience.

In general attacks on religion are fine when they are confined to using specific examples. The imposition of other people’s denominational ideology in the form of anti-abortion legislation on all of us is abhorrent and needs to be called out. Expanding that to include all of the larger religion in which a significant number of people work hard for bodily autonomy and choice is inappropriate. It’s even more inappropriate to include all of religion based on your personal anger at a few people. You’re getting mad at my religion when those people would shoot me dead for my beliefs if the laws didn’t prevent them from doing so.

Strive to be accurate! When someone tells you the United Church of Christ works for Pro-Choice, why do you not believe them?

Fight hard but fight fair. Don’t attack me. I know you’re angry. But don’t attack me or my religion when we are not the ones forcing anti-abortion laws on everyone. We’re fighting for choice! If you have anger issues with all of religion, then you are not being accurate. Perhaps you have studied all of the thousands of worldwide religions, in that case I’ll give you a pass. But most arguments against religion I’ve seen are based on a very narrow view of what religion means. A frequent example is based on science and reason. The attack states that religion is incompatible with science and reason. The religion I belong to has reason and science at its core. We have many atheists and agnostics amongst us. And those atheists are part of this religious community because they are not threatened by other people exploring more metaphysical questions knowing we can all share an appreciation for one another.

The inevitable comments will follow below attacking all of religion over one things or another. Then people will point out counter examples of how it really doesn’t apply to all religions. Ask yourself, who is following the rules of the road here?
