A meeting of the House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday went completely off the rails after Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene accused California Rep. Eric Swalwell of having a sexual relationship with a Chinese spy.
The Republican-controlled committee was taking testimony from U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who was summoned to the Capitol this week to answer questions about the agency's budget. In a video posted on Twitter, Swalwell can be seen wrapping up his questions before Greene is called on to speak.
“That was quite entertaining from someone that had a sexual relationship with a Chinese spy, and everyone knows it,” Greene said in response to Swalwell's line of questioning.
Democratic Rep. Daniel Goldman of New York interrupted Greene and called for a motion to have her comments stricken from the official committee record. He also asked that Greene not be allowed to speak for the remainder of the meeting. The committee's chair, Republican Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee, asked Greene if she would be willing to voluntarily remove her comments from the record, to which she replied, “No, I will not."
The committee stopped action for several minutes as Green reviewed rules and decided what to do next. Ultimately, Greene's comments were not removed from the official committee record, which is unusual even in today's political climate. Remarks about other lawmakers are typically seen as uncouth in official proceedings. Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi said as much in his comments shortly after the chair's decision to not remove Greene's comments from the record.
“We’ve never had an accusation made of any member like that,” he said. “I’m appalled at it. We all ought to be embarrassed at it.”
Greene's remarks were a reference to Swalwell's professional relationship with Christine Fang, who U.S. intelligence officials believe was working on orders from Beijing to befriend up-and-coming politicians in an attempt to gain information and leverage. Swalwell has never been accused of any wrongdoing by law enforcement.
Wall Street Journal policy reporter Michelle Hackman said on Twitter that Greene was later barred from speaking during the hearing after she called Mayorkas a liar. Hackman said the committee's decision to gag Greene took place only a few minutes after the fracas over her comments about Swalwell.
Swalwell later addressed Greene's comments in a tweet.
“The hardest thing I do every day is to wake, feed, and dress 3 little monsters who are 5 and under. Dealing with this crazy lady’s delusions is like dunking in Oz,” he said.”
I am guessing that the dunking in Oz comment is using dunking in the street sense, maybe:
