“Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.” ~ Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
What if you counted the number of criminals in community colleges, universities, law, medical, and technical schools?
You probably wouldn’t find many, if any.
Why?
Because if most criminals were educated, they’d be too busy earning their way as productive, taxpaying citizens who are invested in their families, properties, and futures to be gang-banging, doing drugs, robbing, and assaulting.
Don’t agree?
Think I’m oversimplifying?
Perhaps I can convince you to reconsider if you’d be so kind as to grant my contention that the single dominant thread weaving through every human being who ever lived, is living, or will ever live, is the need to feel good.
In that case, I’d like to posit the following example to justify my assertion that education is the one-word solution to America’s crime dilemma.
Suppose you’re a teenager living with a poverty-stricken dysfunctional family in a crime-ridden community.
You’d likely attend a poorly funded high school where demoralized teachers try but fail to give you a meaningful education to prepare you to become a productive, taxpaying adult.
You have nothing to look forward to and no reasonable expectation of feeling good about yourself or anyone or anything else.
So, you join a gang to feel important, take drugs to get high, steal to satisfy your desire for immediate gratification and assault others to feel powerful.
But what if the men and women elected to preserve and protect the best interests of the American people not only understood but cared that education is the one-word solution to America’s crime dilemma?
They would create a public and private enterprise to deliver resources to your community to help you gain insights into your abilities, talents, and interests while educating you on the essential skills you’d need to pursue a technical, vocational, or professional career that would make you feel good today, tomorrow, and beyond.
If that were the case, would you still need to feel good by committing crimes and threatening the public safety?
Well, would you?
