It is about Justice. Or it should be.
In an Editorial at Talking Points Memo Josh Marshall shows that he is one of the more insightful Journalist (IMHO) when it comes to Politics (Dr. Maddow, Chris Hayes and Dan Rather also come to mind). More important, he knows what he does not know, in this case the strengths and weaknesses of the case bought by DA Bragg:
The legal arguments behind the case are more complicated…On this point fair-minded people…appear divided…I’m not in a position to tell you which narrowly legal arguments are better. But I am in a position to argue against the underlying political argument of those who fear that the legal merits of the case aren’t unassailable.
This is the point over looked by much of the commentaries that have been written about the criminal indictment of DJT. I have read many of them (Dr. Wheeler and her crew are an excellent source of info in this area). Josh himself finds them interesting, but irrelevant, and I agree. Maybe the Orange POS really did raise 10 million dollars from his donors suckers. Maybe it will give him a boost in his run for the Presidency in 2024. And if he walks scot free maybe it will “empower those already trying to tear down the rule of law.” It should not matter.
That is not to say that we should ignore those who attempt to politicize what should be a simple criminal indictment. Again as pointed out by Mr. Marshall the “Village press” thinks that President Biden’s ignoring the Trump hearing “Over shadows” the Biden Presidency. Uhmm... clueless ones, here is a reality check: The Orange Man was the reason the GOP lost in ‘18, ‘20, and mostly in ‘22. Getting indicted for charges most Americans believe he is guilty of is not a winning election strategy. You would realize this if you quit your both siderism addiction and start acting like actual Journalist.
The final point address by Mr. Marshall is the danger of political payback.
Republicans are saying that even though they know...that former President Trump has engaged in...criminal conduct, they will find or manufacture...indictments against future Democratic presidents as a matter of payback.
It is a credible threat, as pointed out Mr. Marshall. The Freedom Fascist Caucus of the House has barely Speaker Kevin by the short hairs. He can’t even use the John without permission. And these Q-Anon types only care about power.
But those of us who actually want to live in a functioning Democracy cannot allow ourselves to be blackmailed into ignoring the rule of law just because a (minority) bunch of Authoritarians want to weaponize it against their perceived enemies. Donald John T****P is a conman who has run a White Collar Criminal Syndicate that openly breaks the law. After almost 50 years the first step to holding him not civilly but criminally accountable. The buck has to stop here. Let the Law be the law, chips fall where they may.
I still believe our Democracy is strong enough to handle it.
