Quick below the radar announcement from Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov. The Ukrainian government has allocated $543M (UAH20B) towards the purchase of FPV drones for military use.

FPV drones are frequently used in drone racing sports, and rather than being flown via PC or tablet, they have a headset that gives the operator a first-person view (FPV) of where the drone is flying. They are lower cost drones, usually around $500~$2000 even for relatively high performance models, because they lack features like the ability to hover.

However, they are maneuverable, fast, and AFU discovered can be strapped with an RPG warhead that can make them deadly against soft targets, like troops in trenches or unarmored vehicles.

Even assuming that AFU is getting the most powerful FPV drones for motors that can carry a warhead, this is conservatively a purchase of more than a hundred thousand FPV drones.

It’s not known if procurement is already ongoing, or how many FPV drones Ukraine has stockpiled. But it does show how highly the AFU thinks of these weapons.

In a previous diary, I discussed NATO tactics in breaching an entrenched Russian defensive position, I noted that FPV suicide drones may be ideal to precede the attack by AFU tanks and APCs on the main trench line, after combat engineers had breached the obstacles.

Regardless of whether these weapons are intended to simply attrit Russian soldiers over time in trench combat, or used in massed waves during a breach assault (or both), they appear to be potent weapons in the evolving modern battlefield.
