What, me not patriotic?

The Daily Mail is shocked to learn from a recent WSJ and University of Chicago poll that U.S. respondents reporting patriotism as an important value have declined from 70% to 38% since 1998 while those citing money have grown from 31% to 43%. Their explanation?

Since 1998, America has been through 9/11 and the war on terror, a global financial crisis in 2008, and has an increasingly polarized political landscape, marked by the election of Donald Trump in 2016.

Ah, yes, all those things that have mysteriously been done to us. I hope you won’t think I’m too much of a chauvinist if I run through a different fact set — one suggesting maybe we’re masters of our own fate, here.

Since 1998:

The House Reptuglican opposition impeached a president for who knows what with an intern;

when the Senate refused to convict, that opposition retaliated by allowing banks to evade Treasury oversight of lending (Gramm-Leach-Bliley);

the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a presidential election a year later by blocking the Florida State Supreme Court's mandated recount despite U.S.Const. I.4;

the president appointed by the U.S. Supreme Court invaded Iraq on grounds widely suspected and later proved to be false;

after which he cut the top tax rate;

national banks finished moving their mortgage lending activity into subsidiaries that Treasury could no longer supervise by 2006;

unsupervised mortgage lending led to a credit collapse in 2007 and 2008;

the reincarnated House Reptuglican opposition cut short the stimulus measures enacted to stabilize the country just a year and a half after the collapse, resulting in a decade of stagnation and rapidly widening inequality;

that opposition burned through the country's AAA bond rating three years later by using the federal debt limit to try to force deeply unpopular cuts in Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security;

Donald Trump was elected several years after that by negative three million votes;

after which he cut the top tax rate; and

don’t get my started about Silicon Valley Bank.

Declining patriotism a mystery? It’s hard to feel emotional attachment to your housemates when they keep trying to burn down the building in the hope you’ll be hurt, too.
