Protasiewicz outraises Kelly more than 5-1 in pre-election reporting period [1]

Liberal Supreme Court candidate Janet Protasiewicz outraised conservative rival Daniel Kelly more than 5-to-1 in the latest reporting period, fueled by more than $8.8 million from the state Dem Party, according to a review of finance reports.
Protasiewicz reported nearly $12.4 million raised between Feb. 7 and March 20, $10.6 million spent and almost $2.1 million cash on hand. She’s now detailed more than $14.5 million in contributions since the start of 2022.
Kelly, the former justice, reported $2.2 million raised over the pre-election period, $2 million spent and $395,098 in the bank. Since launching his campaign, he’s raised more than $2.7 million.
For both candidates, their overall fundraising totals include the late contributions they’ve detailed to the state since the pre-election reporting period closed last week.
During the most recent period, the state Dem Party gave just over $8 million to Protasiewicz in monetary donations along with more than $800,000 in in-kind donations for expenses such as polls, online ads and mail.
Protasiewicz then plowed a good chunk of that money into TV, reporting $8.3 million in expenditures on TV ads during the six-week period.
Of the almost $3.3 million that Protasiewicz raised from individuals, more than $2 million came from nearly 17,000 out-of-state contributors. That comes out to an average of just under $119 per out-of-state donation.
The haul underscores the national significance of the race. It’s also been a significant advantage for Protasiewicz over Kelly, who reported $156,935 from out-of-state donors, and Republicans have sought to make an issue of her contributions from outside Wisconsin.
She reported 30 donors who gave her the maximum contribution of $20,000. Of those, 27 live outside Wisconsin. The three in-state max donors included former Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig.
Other notable donations include $5,000 each from former Dem guv candidate Mary Burke and former Wisconsin first lady Jessica Doyle.

Kelly, who at last week’s debate said he wouldn’t take financial contributions from the state GOP, has accepted $26,750 from county Republican parties.
He also received a $21,250 donation from the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee.
During last week’s debate, Kelly said he rejected accepting funds from the state party because it “gives the appearance that justice is bought and paid for by the political party.” He also knocked Protasiewicz for taking such large contributions from the state Dem Party.
Still, Kelly said he was OK with in-kind contributions. Under state law, those making such donations — which include things like mail and ads to support a candidate — must obtain the candidate’s consent before making the contribution. Both the donors and the benefiting candidate have to report it.
Kelly reported $448,391 in in-kind donations from the state GOP, including $414,733 for printing and $33,658 for postage.
Asked about the different treatment of state party contributions and those from local chapters, adviser Ben Voelkel said Kelly was proud to have the support of grassroots activists while taking a shot at Protasiewicz for the amount she’s taken from the Dem Party and out-of-state donors.
Kelly’s received 18 donations of $20,000, the maximum individual contribution allowed. That includes Beloit billionaire Diane Hendricks and Leonard Leo, co-chairman and former executive vice president of the Federalist Society.
He also received $18,000 from the REALTORS PAC. The Waukesha County GOP accounted for $10,000 of what he received from county parties in monetary donations.
In recent weeks, Protasiewicz and others have run ads knocking Kelly for taking donations from Timothy Zignego and his family members while the Washington County man had a case pending before the Supreme Court. Kelly recused himself from the case, which sought to remove voters who may have moved from the rolls, saying it could impact his 2020 bid to retain his seat. After he lost that election, he notified the parties that he planned to rejoin the suit. In between, Zignego and family members gave Kelly $20,000, though Kelly left the court before the justices heard the case.
Kelly reported donations of $5,000 each from Paul Zignego and David Zignego, both of Hartford, on his latest report.
Kelly’s biggest expense during the period was the $342,500 he listed for TV ads.
