Maybe we should ask the guy on the right if he's got a better idea?

And in the Totally Useless Republican Solutions Department of Uselessness, there’s this gem of an idea from Rick Scott:

www.huffpost.com/…

His suggestion is that school shooters should automatically receive the death penalty without exception if convicted. I have my own opinions about the death penalty in general, but what strikes me most is the utter stupidity of Scott trying to pass this off as some kind of deterrant.

In the majority of school shooting cases, the perpetrator appears to expect to be killed. (In some instances when it has been possible to recover any writings, manifestos, social media posts, etc. they make this pretty clear. Is someone bent on a (mass) murder-suicide mission very likely to see the death penalty as much of a threat? Maybe some of them have some grand vision of laying waste to a bunch of kids and then walking away and never getting caught, but it doesn’t look that way.

Not to mention, in instances where law enforcement engages with mass shooters (assuming they’re brave enough to go in, that is *cough Uvalde*), bringing the shooter out alive doesn’t seem to be the first priority. If the only way to stop them is “a good guy with a gun” then it’s pretty much expected that stop = kill, no?

Really, Rick? This is the best you’ve got?

Can someone please make this make sense to me?
