Sorry I have been away for a while.
Does the System Work really work? I I have addressed this in the past, but I believe a follow-up admonition is now necessary. Where did we hear before, protestations that “The system works?” We heard this before in times when observers wanted to defuse criticisms of the status quo. Accordingly, arguments that “The system works” was voiced prominently after Former President Nixon was forced to step down, after the Watergate scandal. Nixon’s supporters and apathetic enablers took comfort in the fact that nothing changed after he left office; no real reform in governance ensued, and a new leader took over, in a process that ignored constitutional order and left the country in the hands of an “Acting President”. The system did not work: A corrupt Vice President was allowed to step aside in favor of a Congressman never elected to a national executive office, and a “crooked” President was allowed to resign without facing consequences for his misdeeds. The system did NOT work, but the status quo was preserved. Oh, and Mr. Ford then pardoned the disgraced former president and absolved him of any additional wrongs for which he might be held accountable.
In a totally separate circumstance today, a message in my In-box from “Progressive Takeover” reports: “WOW: Experts suggest Biden should pardon Trump after his arrest”, and asks, “Should Biden PARDON Trump?” — Yes or No? We have now seen and heard, in Trump’s own words, evidence of criminal offenses he committed. He needs to be held accountable for his misdeeds, that incited violence and prompted an insurrection in an attempt to overthrow the government of the United States. Is this not Treason?
The Constitution provides legally binding processes to respond to such offenses. Our democratic system holds that no person is above the law, which applies especially to those whose words and actions violated their oath to defend the Constitution. Trump deserves no relief through the Pardon process: He must be held accountable.
