A boogeyman scapegoat for all of Detroit’s troubles has been banished once again. Not critical race theory, not “woke-ism,” but a mythical red dwarf known as the Nain Rouge who gave Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac some important warnings a few centuries ago, according to legend.
Yesterday, revelers for the 11th annual Marche du Nain Rouge gathered at Canfield and Second in midtown Detroit and made their way south on Second to the Masonic Temple (Detroit is in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, actually north of Windsor, Canada).
Once everyone was there, someone in a Nain Rouge costume and half a dozen or so women and girls put on a couple of song and dance numbers, before the mythical troublemaker vanished behind umbrellas and a couple of plumes of pink smoke.
Here in Detroit we’re more worried about a certain governor of another peninsula state who might be terrorist Trump’s spiritual heir...

With the repeal of the Orwellianly-named “right to work,” Florida politicians are trying to position Florida as a supposedly “free” alternative to Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Michigan) is not having that nonsense.
x "And unlike Florida, we will protect your rights by keeping extreme MAGA (Make America Great Again) Republican intrusion out of family decisions, schools and workplaces," said Bobby Leddy, Gov. Whitmer’s spokesman, in response to the billboard.

That thing about a “pleasant peninsula” is a riff on Michigan’s state motto. But if Florida is to remain a peninsula (as opposed to a sunken land like the mythical Atlantis), it’ll take a “woke” effort to stave off the effects of climate change. So yeah, don’t Florida my Detroit.
Kid Rock is of much less concern.
x Personally, I think there should be a parade dedicated to vanquishing Kid Rock from Detroit. #detroit #nainrouge — Nain Rouge (@RealNainRouge) September 5, 2017
And Mike Lindell, with his Election Crime Bureau, is just a cheap punchline.
x Boarding my private plane now. Fun fact: even though it's a thousand years older than @realMikeLindell's private plane, my private plane is in much better condition. No door has ever fallen off of it. Mwahahahahahaha! — Le Nain Rouge (@Le_NainRouge) March 27, 2023
It is appropriate that a mythological being should have multiple accounts on Twitter, according to different interpretations of the myth. “Le Nain Rouge” seems to fit more the interpretation of the Nain as an evil being who discourages Detroiters and must be banished, while “Real Nain Rouge” encourages a more holistic view of the legend, in which the Nain looks out for the city and should have our support.
The announced “protest” at the parade was about the latter view of the Nain.
The “protest” was just as peaceful as the parade itself, and not at all disruptive (unlike the “Christians” who tried to disrupt the St. Patrick’s Day parade a couple of weeks ago).
The Nain Rouge claims he will return to Detroit “in a few months with plenty of time to spare” for his banishment next year.
