The US rejecting calls for a ceasefire in Ukraine ahead of the meeting of Chinese and Russian leaders again showed its ulterior motive of fueling the fire of conflict and using Ukraine as its pawn to geopolitically weaken Russia to the maximum level, Chinese experts said, who also pointed out the sharp contrast between Washington and Beijing, with the latter always seeking peace and dialogue on the matter. The US also views the China-proposed position paper on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis with "deep skepticism," and Kirby said "we do not believe that this is a step toward a just and durable peace."
"The US rejects any effort that is conducive to easing the situation, as it always hopes to escalate the tension and use Ukraine as a pawn to weaken Russia. The US wants to punish Russia in a ruthless and uncompromising way," Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations at the China Foreign Affairs University, told the Global Times on Saturday.
According to China news outlet the Global Times, Xi will hold a video call with Zelensky after his meeting with Putin. However, if you read this article and the one that announces Xi’s planed video call to Zelensky, all they are is propaganda promoting China as a benevolent world leader as apposed to the US hegemonic bullying. Neither article discusses either Russia or Ukraine’s position on the validity of the war, it simply calls for a ceasefire and a negotiated peace.
China’s Ambassador to Russia, Zhang Hanhui, discusses Xi’s visit to Russia primarily in economic terms, which is not surprising. However, the absence of a voiced position on Russia's justification for invading Ukraine or a voiced position on Ukraine’s clams of sovereignty by leaves Zelensky’s strong claims of self-defense as the ruling argument. China’s long diatribe chastising the US has no impact on the justness of Ukraine’s position that a ceasefire is an existential threat to its existence.
It’s unreasonable to expect Xi to change his position on the ceasefire and his call for negotiations because of his call to Zelensky, but a visit to Ukraine by Xi might do the trick. That’s my goal for Xi’s first round of talks. I’m hoping Zelensky can persuade Xi to accept his invitation to visit Ukraine and assess the situation for himself. Given the strong symmetry between Zelensky and Xi’s peace proposals on the issues that effect the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, it is reasonable to expect that Xi’s private conversations with Putin will take a much less tolerant tone.
