What, as they say, do you call a failed coup? Practice. Don’t risk regretting inaction. [1]

If, in November of 2024, the Wisconsin Supreme Court throws the election to Trump or DeSantis, you will wish with all your heart that you’d done more to win this April 4.

Chip in now—and then read on. This is scary stuff. Don’t risk regretting inaction.

20 days from now, voters in Wisconsin's April 4 state Supreme Court election will determine whether MAGAites or progressives have the majority for at least the next two years. So let’s imagine what the fall of 2024 could look like if GOPer Dan Kelly wins.

Let’s imagine a hypothetical scenario for October 2024. It’s tight. Wisconsin is, once again, right on a knife’s edge. It’s not hard to draw an Electoral College map in which Wisconsin will decide the winner.

Now imagine it’s October 21, 2024—the day before Early Vote begins in Wisconsin for the presidential election. Imagine the state Supreme Court issuing a 4-3 ruling—with Dan Kelly as the deciding vote—that throws the election into chaos. Suddenly, a slew of ballots could be rejected.

Imagine, if you will, that these hypothetical 2024 ballots in danger of rejection, because of Dan Kelly’s vote on the state Supreme Court, are absentee ballots, or student ballots, or ballots of people who’ve moved recently—all disproportionately likely to be Democrats.

Now imagine that it’s November 5, 2024. Election Day. Ballot counting begins. As in 2020, Trump pulls into an early lead—but many absentee ballots, including Milwaukee’s, won’t be counted until later at night. Number-crunchers predict another Biden win, in a squeaker. But then…

At 10pm on Election Night, 2024, imagine that the Wisconsin Supreme Court issues another ruling—demanding that the counting stop, citing unverified claims of irregularities. Claims that observers believe are coming from GOP activists. The count freezes, with Trump still ahead.

You can imagine for yourself what could happen next, with the entire presidential race hanging in the balance. The scenarios can get very grim, very fast.

In that moment, there would be no good options. But you, watching TV and obsessively refreshing Twitter, would think back.

How much differently would it have gone if Wisconsin hadn’t put the GOP’s “election integrity” legal advisor onto the state Supreme Court? How different would it have been if the court had a 4-3 majority that believed in democracy and the rule of law—not just GOP dominance?

What, in that moment, would you wish that you’d done now? How much would you be willing, that night, to go back in time and donate to keep Dan Kelly off the Supreme Court? How many hours would you be willing to volunteer?

You won’t have any hours left on the night of November 5, 2024. But right now, you’ve still got three weeks. Can you sign up for some phone banking shifts?
