The AP is reporting that today Stormy Daniels, porn star, met with NY Prosecutors investigating the Trump hush money scandal. Her attorney said she answered all questions and was willing to be a witness, if necessary. Daniels said that she had consensual sex with Trump in 2006. Trump has said repeatedly that it never happened. Just before the Presidential election in 2016, Michael Cohen, Trumps lawyer, at the time, said he paid $130,000 on behalf of Trump to prevent her from revealing her story on national television.
In 2018, Michael Cohen was charged by the SDNY with federal crimes relating to the payment and later plead guilty. He was sentenced to 3 years in jail, but subsequently released early. Trump was never charged by the SDNY, although Cohen had named Trump as the individual who directed the payment to Daniels, and upon whose behalf he was working when he made the $130,000 payment to Daniels. The SDNY later closed the investigation against Trump without charging him.
Alvin Brag, the Manhattan DA opened an investigation in late 2022 or early 2023 into whether Trump violated NYS law in authorizing the payments to Daniels, and then making false entries on his company's books indicating payments to Cohen were legitimate legal fees when, in fact, they were payments to Cohen to reimburse him for the $130,000 he paid to Ms. Daniels on Trump’s behalf. The NY DA also argues that the payment was made to influence the 2016 election, and therefore the false statements constituted a felony.
Michael Cohen testified before the NY Grand Jury today and yesterday, and in televised interviews said he answered all questions, and would testify at trial, if necessary. The attorney for Ms. Daniels also indicated she was cooperating in full with the DA and would testify if necessary.
It is now up the District Attorney to decide when and if he will request the GJ to issue an indictment against Trump charging him with criminal violations of NYS law. This decision could come tomorrow, Friday or next week.
