The example in the article is the difference between the sky is blue and taxes are good, but anyone who has not been hiding in a cave for the last decade understands where this is going. We are in the middle of a right-wing reaction. Woman's rights are being rolled back. Gays are being attacked as groomers. Honest accounting of racism, sexism and, to a lesser extent, classism, in American history are being banned form public schools in many parts of the country and lies about the last election and the January 6th insurrection are being accepted as fact by the leadership of the GOP. OpenAI's different perspectives aren't going to be about policy but about reality. They intend ot create a chatbot that will tell lies to conservatives (and likely to liberals, but liberals have far fewer beliefs that run counter to reality).

This has to be stopped. People have to burn OpenAI's products right now, right here. Any tool, system, product that incorporates these programs has to be treated as unreliable, as a joke. OpenAI's complete lack of ethics gives us no choice. If we allow this blatant money grab to succeed, if we OpenAI to forgo their ethical responsibility to the truth in exchange for making money by flattering fabulists, we are weakening our democracy in disturbing ways.

Perhaps I am being unfair to OpenAI. Perhaps they really will adhere to the truth and focus on policy disagreements. But the onus is on them to prove that now, upfront. And until they do, we cannot pretend that the danger is not real. Creating programs that lie to people in order to make them more likely to use the program will make OpenAI more money. But it will also do real damage to our society. We don't have any obligation to help them in that particular evil.
