It was early summer, 1973. I'd left my car with my brother in Chicago, and he'd dropped me off at the train station. One-way to Carbondale. Friends of a friend were putting me up until the dorms opened in two days and late that first night I borrowed a bike and went riding, it was all new to me, and when I got to the campus, all rolling and sloping with big wide sidewalks, it was after dark, but every outside light was lit and there was not a soul in sight. I must have ridden around for an hour, when an odd turn took me to a roadside diner. I went in to get a burger and coke -- Beethoven's 9th was playing on the radio.
