Iโ€™ll get to Italy anon. But first โ€” how would you make a pizza in the U.S. in the 1790s?

Townsends creates a Pizza for George Washington

What if you traveled back in time and wanted to absolutely blow peoples mind with you favorite food, pizza. You wouldn't be able to make it exactly how you do today, you would have to find ingredients they had then and adapt them to make the perfect pie! From the YouTube description.

I didnโ€™t see any links to a written recipe for this one. [6;36]

We all know the origin of the Pizza Margherita, donโ€™t we? In 1889 Queen Margherita was coming to Naples, and Raffaele Esposito, chef at Pizzeria Brandi, created a pizza in the colors of the Italian flag, and named it after her.

This story is most likely fiction, however. The pizza was probably really served at Pizzeria Brandi, but the use of these three toppings had already been fairly widespread in Naples for decades, and it is described in a 1866 book. It mightโ€™ve been christened the โ€œMargheritaโ€ at the Pizzeria Brandi, but some sources claim the name could also stem from the arranging of mozzarella slices like the petals of a daisy (margherita in Italian). www.atlasobscura.com/...

Nevertheless, itโ€™s a classic, as is Neapolitan-style pizza in general.

This Pizza Margherita from Poor Manโ€™s Gourmet Kitchen looks amazing.

Kitchen on the Cliff with Giovanna offers Pizza Siciliana

Also known as sfincione, Sicilian-style pizza has a thick crust with a fluffy, sponge-like consistency. It is baked in a rectangular shaped pan, topped with tomato sauce, anchovies, onions, oregano, and a hard sheep's milk cheese. For the final touch, the pizza is covered in breadcrumbs which help absorb some of the oil from the ingredient. Sfincione is often served in bakeries rather than pizzerias as a snack or street food. www.eataly.com/...

NY Style Pizza demonstrated by Adam Ragusea

"1905 was widely thought to be the first time that pizza was offered in the United States, at Lombardi's in New York City," says Dolinsky. "But digging into history a bit more, it looks like it was the late 1880s and 1890s, when coal-fired oven pizza was first sold by Italian immigrants in New York. That grew into a whole pizza belt along the eastern seaboard." A twist on Neapolitan pie, New York slices can now be purchased on pretty much every corner. www.eatthis.com/...

Emmymade presents Detroit style Pizza

Detroit pizzas are built in reverse. Creamy, tangy Brick cheese from Wisconsin is cubed and applied directly to the top of the dough, where it bakes up gooey, buttery, and thick in the middle, crispy and dark brown around the edges. On top of the cheese is a sweet, thick tomato sauce, seasoned with plenty of garlic and spices and often applied in heavy parallel bands. If you order the pizza with pepperoni (the most common topping) โ€ฆ you might find it โ€ฆ buried underneath the cheese, where its flavor seeps in and penetrates every bite. www.seriouseats.com/...

Emmy adapted her pizza from the recipe at the link above. [12:52]

Crouton Crackerjacks makes a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Breakfast Pizza

Cold pizza for breakfast has long satisfied legions of hungover college students with its hearty, comforting, cheesy goodness. But over the past 30-odd years, more traditional breakfast items, both savory and sweet, have found their way onto pizza crusts. โœ‚๏ธ Whatever its true origins, breakfast pizza is now almost as commonplace as Capโ€™n Crunch. If itโ€™s on a breakfast menu, chances are, someone has slapped it on a pie. www.pmq.com/...

There are a lot of different kinds of dessert pizza. I thought this version looked wonderful.

Fruit Dessert Pizza from Simply Home Cooked

Thereโ€™s just something so summery about a fruit pizza. Maybe itโ€™s the bright, glossy colorsโ€ฆ or the freshness of in-season fruits and berriesโ€ฆ or the fact that it reminds me of a sunburst or a firework exploding in the sky. If you were to ask me to recommend a dessert to bring to a summertime BBQ, fruit pizza would immediately come to mind. The combination of a soft, buttery sugar cookie crust with tangy-sweet cream cheese frosting and colorful fresh fruit is nostalgic AND irresistible! sallysbakingaddiction.com/...

Recipe is here. N.B.: You can also use a refrigerated sugar cookie dough instead of making your own, if you wish. [4:10]
