Generative AI is a branch of artificial intelligence focused on creating new content such as images, text, and recently video. Hands up everyone who wants to play with text-to-Pixar. After the breakthrough of stable diffusion image quality has gone from crappy to spectacular in a matter of months. Watch this John Oliver video to see what the best GenAI produced just six months ago and compare his results to the above image I made yesterday. And it’s still improving.

The possibilities for the use of generative AI are endless. Artists can use it for ideas, inspiration, and exploring variations. In entertainment, generative AI can be used to create more realistic and interactive video games, movies, and music. In education, generative AI can be used to develop more efficient and personalized learning systems that can adapt to individual learning styles. Many lawyers are already using ChatGPT to help when making documents. In healthcare, generative AI can be used to create better diagnostic tools and to discover new treatments and therapies for diseases. In business, generative AI can be used to develop new products and services or even create entirely new business models. And it’s just fun without any greater goal in mind.

Generative AI poses both pros and cons to society as with any disruptive technology. On the positive side, it can lead to more personalized and efficient solutions in various fields, improve creative productions, enable new types of content, and let people’s imagination run wild. However, there are also potential risks such as the creation of fake or misleading content, loss of jobs due to automation, and the potential for the technology to be used for misinformation.

Despite the potential risks inherent in all technology today, generative AI is here and being enthusiastically expanded and explored.
