Jankowicz, 33, is a researcher and author of two books whose stint heading the Biden administration’s Disinformation Governance Board lasted a few weeks last spring before the board itself was dissolved by the administration following an outcry by GOP lawmakers that it was going to censor the free speech of conservatives.

This is the disturbing, but not surprising, story of one person’s encounter with the parallel world of Republican free speech. Republicans have weaponized the constitution against itself, and they are doing it right out in the open. Any challenges to their lies or misrepresentations of facts by elected officials, legitimate media or recognized activist are not challenged for content but as attempts to stifle the conservative point of view.

The damage being done by their disinformation campaigns is threatening our democracy. Instead of debating facts, progressives are constantly defending themselves against personal attacks. We do a lot of fact checking here at DKos post-by-post and quite often in comments, but it’s time for a more focused effort to counter disinformation and its perpetrators.

I don’t have a specific recommendation for addressing disinformation, but I hope this post will open a discussion that may lead to a plausible approach to attacking this issue.
