In a Colorado disciplinary proceeding, Jenna Ellis, senior legal advisor to former President Donald Trump who was crucial to his efforts to spread the Big Lie, has admitted to making “misrepresentations” on at least ten occasions.
In his opinion , the presiding disciplinary judge, Bryon Large, said that Ellis had made these misrepresentations on Twitter and on national television shows such as Fox Business, MSNBC, Fox News, and Newsmax”. These misrepresentations helped to undermine faith in the 2020 presidential elections and so, Ellis has been publicly censured by the disciplinary court.
This is not the first time that someone in the Republican Party has been forced to admit to what amounts to lying. Ellis claimed that Hillary Clinton didn't concede the 2016 election, that Trump's team had evidence of a“coordinated effort in all of these states to transfer votes either from Trump to Biden, to manipulate the ballots, to count them in secret”, that Trump “won in a landslide”, and that 500,000 illegal votes were cast in Arizona. None of these claims have passed the smell test, and she knew it, but she persisted in spreading them.
We have already heard about how Tucker Carlson and many hosts at Fox News , and the chairman himself, Rupert Murdoch, spread misinformation that they knew was wrong. Among Trump’s lawyers, she is the first to admit to making “misrepresentations”, but she is not the first to face disciplinary action. Rudy Giuliani has had his license temporarily suspended, and John Eastman is preparing for disciplinary proceedings in California. Jeffrey Clark faces disciplinary proceedings in Washington, which he has managed to delay in an effort to shift the battle to federal court. What we can learn from these cases is that the Republican Party has become a party of lies.
It is deeply troubling that Ellis's actions were aimed at undermining confidence in the American election system. There is no precedent for an attorney to aid a sitting president's bid to subvert democracy in this way. It is clear that Ellis had a selfish motive, and her pattern of misconduct only underscores her lack of commitment to the rule of law.
The Republican Party has become the party of lies. Its members are willing to engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation in order to maintain power. This is not the behavior of a responsible political party. It is the behavior of a group of individuals who are more concerned with their own interests than with the good of the country. In a choice between party and country, Republicans have consistently chosen a party, even at the expense of the very thing we treasure the most: our nation’s democratic foundations.
We cannot allow Republicans like Jenna Ellis to continue to spread lies and misinformation. We must hold them accountable for their actions and demand that they be held to a higher standard of conduct. We must insist that they honor their duty of candor to the public and uphold the rule of law.
The future of our democracy depends on it. We cannot allow politicians to undermine our electoral system and erode the public's trust in our government. We must stand up to those who would subvert the will of the people and defend the integrity of our democracy.
Jenna Ellis's misrepresentations are a clear indication of the Republican Party's descent into dishonesty and deceit. We must hold Republicans accountable for their actions and demand that they adhere to a higher standard of conduct. Our democracy is at stake, and we must act now to protect it.
