Remember the Maine!
While overblown, the story that William Randolph Hearst's jingoistic "yellow journalism" was the fuse that started the Spanish-American War nevertheless highlights the persuasive, and pernicious, influence of rogue journalism.
According to historian W. Joseph Campbell, the myth survives because it vindicates the popular notion that "the media at their worst can lead the country into a war it otherwise would not have fought.”
The revelations about Fox News that are now appearing as a result of the Dominion lawsuit show just how despicable "worst" can be. Fox’s continuous and focused false reporting have brainwashed large segments of the electorate as well as their elected representatives and have brought this country closer to war - only this time, a civil war - than any time since Reconstruction.
If it were not immeasurably tragic to know that the opinions of half of the House of Representatives were formed by a corporation interested only in preserving its revenue stream by stroking the balls of its audience, it would be ludicrous. But Fox News is now the most widely watched news source in the US. Regretably, it is the face of mainstream news.
This is not “yellow jornalism” It is blood red. The false calls of fire have indeed panicked its pliable audience and encouraged eager arsonists to validate the lies. It is naive to believe that this treasonous reportage is explained simply by the desire to garner ratings or the sociopathic and narcissistic hypocrosy of its anchors and funders. It is time to look deeper. Is Tucker Carlson's free speech a line item on Putin's payroll?
