I just read a diary with comments about eating squirrels. It compelled me to write my first. I want to be clear; I’m not disparaging anyone who eats squirrels (well, maybe a little) or thinks differently. I am advocating a position with some exposition to make it interesting.
I have been a vegetarian since I was seven years old. I made this decision when my parents took me to a seafood restaurant on vacation. I was not a dumb child, but I always pictured cows flipping meat patties when I heard burgers were “from cows.” I didn’t understand the cows were the burgers. Seriously, I thought there were cows in the kitchen flipping burgers. Maybe I was dumb.
My parents thought I’d like choosing a lobster out of the tank. I instead embarrassed my parents by making them purchase the lobster and leave the restaurant to drop it back into the ocean. It was probably caught and served the next day, but I hope not. You could also argue those were some good parents.
I don’t believe vegetarians help our cause with rhetoric disparaging the choices other people make. I vehemently disagree with the idea of raising animals in factory farm conditions, but we cannot change culture with vitriol. My wife and kids eat meat. We’ve been eating less over time with my gentle encouragement. I don’t hide my motives. I explain my thoughts when my family or friends ask or seem inclined to listen. A meatless world solves a lot of climate change and other socioeconomic problems. It is possible.
I’m realizing this is short enough to be a comment in a thread, but I’m going to throw it out there.
