On some game nights, the Islanders run a promotion where you can win the chance to watch warm-ups from the Islanders penalty box. The promotion is sponsored by one of the branded bars in the arena. There are two ways to enter the raffle; you can either scan a QR code that is on one the signs by the bar or text a word to one of those 5 or 6 digit numbers. Once you do that, you fill in some info and they tell if you won or not. Because I typically forget about the raffle, I usually enter when I see it on the video board. Not unsurprisingly, I always lose. A couple of weeks ago, my sister and I got to the arena early as we usually do. When we sat down in out seats, I remembered the raffle and decided to enter it right then. Boy was I shocked when after I put my info in, it said we won.

This turned into one of those good things bad things. Watching warm ups from the penalty box would be cool and it came with a couple of bonus prizes that are not disclosed in the info. One was going into a suite where there would be free food and drinks. We usually eat before arriving at the arena, so we grabbed stuff we could take back to our seats like bottled water, popcorn and candy. It also came with a couple of Islanders toque hats and a $100 Visa gift card.

On the bad side of the equation, we sit on the exact opposite side of the arena from the meeting spot which meant we had to gather our stuff and walk all the way back to the main entrance to the meet up point after just walking all the way to our seats on the upper concourse. A small but not inconsequential price to pay. I also had to deal with the fact that my sister isn’t big on being on the video board which of course we were a couple of times.

The other consequence of winning is the ribbing we got from our friends where we sit. I knew that was going to happen and so I was prepped with the comeback I needed in case it got a bit ridiculous. Thankfully, everyone was mostly just excited to see someone they win and some people took pictures of the video board showing us.

But this wasn’t our only recent raffle win. This past Sunday we went to the annual Kiwanis pancake breakfast. We all bought some raffle tickets to support sending kids to a camp in upstate NY. As the raffle winners were being announced, my sister had the audacity to complain she never wins anything. Wouldn’t you know it, she ended up winning twice. Unfortunately, both wins were candy baskets. Why when we own a candy store does she want to win candy baskets is something I will never understand. It did help there were some books in one basket and all the baskets can be used to make our own candy baskets to sell in the store.

Tonight’s question: what was the best thing you ever won in a raffle?

Enjoy some of the pictures I took from the penalty box below:

Electrolyte drinks players down by the gallon during the game. I thought about stealing a towel on the bench behind me.

The scoring people who work for the NHL

We played Ottawa that night.

Up close and personal even if he never noticed me.

Panorama shot. A bit small uploading it.
