Black Swallowtail Butterfly
There was just enough of a morning chill that the Swallowtail waited for the sun to glow before unfolding into it’s full glory. There were other things demanding my attention. Here is a photo from “Wiki” of the opened wings of the graceful flier I saw.
Bird calls began to fill the air. The demands of a nesting pair of Fish crows caught my attention. Here is a short 42 second video of their interaction.
There was a motion across the calm surface. I followed the brown blur with my binoculars as it skimmed along. I assumed there was an Otter following a school of minnows. Shortly, the fur bundle swam toward me. I began filming. This video is 2:23 minutes of the pleasant surprise I received.
After the thrill of watching the Beaver, I noticed big birds on a sand outcrop. Among the small flock of Pelicans were several gulls and terns. Here is what I saw.
That’s when I noticed that the big brown gulls were different. I took another shot to compare them.
I took a quick shot of the Red-breasted Mergansers that were still hanging around. This shot is a male and a juvenile male (dark area around the eye). It seems the juvie males and females look alike until the male begin develop their colorful plumage for breeding.

I will end this segment as I did my morning at the lake. Enjoy this moment with a Tufted Titmouse singing to attract a mate.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.
