What disinformation looks like: “They were peaceful, they were orderly and meek. These were not insurrectionists, they were sightseers”
Federal prosecutors have charged nearly 1,000 people with crimes for their actions that day, according to the Justice Department , including more than 300 for assaulting or interfering with police. More than 500 rioters have pleaded guilty, 60 of them for attacking officers.
“It’s really sad to see Tucker Carlson go off the rails like that. The American people saw what happened on Jan. 6. They’ve seen the people who got injured. They saw the damage to the building. You can’t hide the truth by selectively picking a few minutes out of tapes. It’s so absurd, it’s nonsense,” Romney said.
Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said Jan. 6 “was clearly more than a peaceful protest of some rowdy boy scouts,” while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he wasn’t interested in “whitewashing” the events.
“I think it’s bullshit,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) told reporters Tuesday when asked about Carlson’s portrayal of the events as mostly peaceful. “When you see police officers assaulted, all of that ... if you were just a tourist, you should’ve probably lined up at the visitors’ center and came in on an orderly basis.”

Members of Public Citizen filed a complaint against McCarthy on Tuesday, requesting that the Office of Congressional Ethics investigate the speaker over whether he violated House rules. The request comes one day after Carlson began releasing portions of the footage on his prime-time show, prompting concerns among other news outlets he would “advocate an inaccurate story of events.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is facing an ethics complaint filed by a nonprofit watchdog group that accuses the GOP leader of being politically motivated in his release of security camera footage of the Jan. 6 riot to Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
The Principles First Summit was implicitly constructed as a counterweight to the MAGA-fied CPAC. But the programming also served to underscore the often-bleak, occasionally hopeless, existence that comes with being a modern day anti-Trump Republican.

The former Bush speechwriter turned columnist David Frum compared their effort to reform the party to blazing a landing strip in the middle of the jungle and simply waiting for planes to land. Former congressional candidate Clint Smith, who switched his party affiliation from Republican to Independent to challenge Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), described his state’s GOP as a forest of trees killed by an invasive species of beetle that crawls under bark to poison from the inside. Panels for the event included “Looking to 2024: Hope and Despair — but Mostly Despair” and “Can the GOP survive?”
The two-day confab at the luxury Conrad Hotel, billed as the Principles First Summit, was implicitly constructed as a counterweight to the MAGA-fied Conservative Political Action Conference. But the programming also served to underscore the often-bleak, occasionally hopeless, existence that comes with being a modern day anti-Trump Republican.
What does it signal for the direction of conservative politics and for the belle of the ball, Donald Trump? Were the ballrooms barren because some of the faithful decided to at long last change the channel from the Trump show? Or did they just figure they didn’t want to contribute to the legal defense fund of a dude who pummeled another dude’s dick against his will (allegedly).
Or is the reality simply that the entire Republican party is CPAC now, so there’s no real need for it anymore? Especially when there’s a younger, more dynamic offering for culture warriors looking for fellowship in Turning Point USA?
It’s probably a bit of each. What we do know is that Trump won the straw poll, again, with Tiny D finishing a distant second. But whether that matters . . . whether it’s a precursor of primaries to come or more of a Fat Elvis-meets-Ron Paul demonstration of fading niche power is something we can speculate about, but won’t actually know until next year’s CPAC.
