This article in Current Affairs Magazine seems timely, though it was published 4 years ago.
Its focus was the end of editorial independence at Deadspin, followed by mass resignation of staff. I am not suggesting this is what I recommend for Kos workers; only they can decide what is best for them. This is not an attack on Kos, but a clear statement: We need worker-owned media.
If workers owned their companies, many of these tragedies wouldn’t happen. It would be up to the journalists and editors to decide whether they wanted to sell their newspaper…. decisions about the fate of the company would be in the hands of those whose fate it actually was.
Current Affairs is small and it’s easier for us to do this because we have four paid staff. [Note: this was 4 years ago] But the point is: If we are to stand a chance of having quality independent media, we must build the worker-owned, reader-funded model. ... But ownership and control must be with employees and the company must be governed democratically.
I read Kos, along with other sources, and I often appreciate what I find there. There is — I hope — a place in our media for the Daily Kos. What I’m hoping here is that there are also some reading this who may agree about democratic control, and even some who may be in a position to do something about it.
In case you think this idea is really outside the realm of what’s possible and doable, here’s another link: a list of cooperatively run media. There are 3 pages of it; they span several languages and 3 continents. Many are small operations, but to me their contributions are important, and their existence is an inspiration.
