NC Policy Watch, Quentin Young, 3/3/2023
America is a country-size arsenal.
There are 20% more guns in the U.S. than people. Americans are estimated to own 393 million of the 857 million guns in the world, or almost half — 46% — of all civilian guns.
And the obscene ubiquity of firearms in the U.S. explains much about why the country is a killing field without parallel in the developed world. Anyone who has studied the matter arrives at a simple conclusion: More guns means more death.
“Most countries do not have a problem with fatal mass shootings,” Daniel Webster, the co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions, told a Fox affiliate last year after the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. “It’s because we have decided to make guns readily available to almost anyone and our interests seem to be more protecting those who sell weapons and want to own them as opposed to the broader public.”
This choice has disfigured American society.

NC's Senator (spit) Ted Budd, owner of a gunshoporama and shooting range very famously said in an interview before the 2022 election that the staff of his store use their "feelings" when deciding to sell to a prospective customer.
One Democratic talking point about Budd's shop that got lost in the shuffle (it's the first I've heard it and I keep up with these things) is that his deadly weapon Walmart sells insurance for domestic abusers. Per Jezebel:
Ted Budd, North Carolina’s Republican nominee for Senate, is one of two sitting U.S. congressmen to own a gun store, and his advertises on its website an insurance provider that supports gun owners who face domestic violence charges. Some advocates and family members of gun violence victims have called insurance plans like this—which have also been advertised by the NRA—“murder insurance.” Budd’s store, ProShots, is located in Rural Hall, North Carolina, and in advertising U.S. Law Shield insurance, the Senate candidate seems unnervingly willing to help customers who might use their guns from ProShots to hurt or threaten partners or family members. Budd holds an A-rating from the NRA for his votes against gun safety legislation, and the group has also endorsed him in his Senate race.
Also, with the proliferation of North Carolina extremist connections to January 6th and the Charlottesville Massacre, one thing we don't know is where they got their weapons.
Could Budd's gun store be a public nuisance, selling weapons to violent domestic terrorists, unstable domestic abusers, mass shooters, or common criminals?
We'll never know because NC doesn't have a law that requires reporting of the origin of weapons used by criminals and allows the shutting down of gun stores that facilitate crime.

A bill to end North Carolina’s pistol purchase permit system passed the state Senate and is now in the hands of the House. Currently, people who want to buy a handgun have to either have a conceal-carry permit or get a permit from the county sheriff.
The bill makes several other changes to state gun laws, including allowing handguns on school property where religious services are being held. It also includes a section launching a new state campaign on safe gun storage and distributing free gun locks.
Senate Bill 41, titled Guarantee 2nd Amend Freedom and Protections, passed the Senate Feb. 16 on a party-line vote. Republicans have a veto-proof majority in the Senate and are one vote shy of a supermajority in the House.
Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a similar bill last year that would have done away with the pistol permit system.
Democrats proposed several amendments to the bill before it passed, including universal background checks for gun sales.
Thanks for reading and contributing, I hope you have a safe week.
