KTK
Covid
Many KTKers know I contracted covid 10 days ago. I was able to get Paxlovid almost immediately, plus a panoply of pills recommended by the doctor, vitamin D, vitamin C, Zinc, and Quercetin, an antioxidant. One or two bad days, of no appetite and much sleep. As of yesterday I felt great, but this morning I re-tested and found out I was still positive. Research shows there’s a wide variety of outcomes for this. There’s something called Paxlovid rebound, which often means testing positive after testing negative. Some patients keep testing positive for quite a long time, even weeks. Time will tell. All of my appointments this week have to either be cancelled of converted to Zoom or phone. And I’ll miss opening day at our new and improved pool hall.
I found a book in our condo “little library”, The Body by Bill Bryson. Highly recommended, as he is an entertaining and thoriough writer. The basis is that the human body is so amazing and works so well, it’s hard to believe. Some of the facts are gobsmacking:
You make a million red blood cells per second.
There are 100 trillion cells in a human body.
You have a meter of DNA in every cell.
20 billion strands of DNA laid side by side would be thinner than a human hair
The skin on your eyelid is only one thousandth of an inch thick.
Your heart pumps 1,680 gallons per day.
The pages are filled with facts like these, and stories of the researchers who discovered them, many surprisingly recently. Particularly interesting is the immune system, on which I am presently depending.
