DK and the Guild [1]

Like many of you I’ve read some of the back and forth between the DK Guild and Kos. On the whole, I’ve found Kos to be more persuasive and more transparent about what is actually going on, but that’s not what I’m writing about. I don’t really want to pick sides. I want the Daily Kos staff, management and community to be be united in fighting for progressive values and policies. I want to continue to rely on DK for the best coverage I’ve seen anywhere of the war in Ukraine. DK has become my best source for information, analysis, and creative thinking about all the issues that matter to me.

I understand that money, and lack of money, is at the root of this current conflict and, as a community, that is something we can solve. I already donate $5 a month to DK. It’s just $5 because that’s the only amount available as a recurring donation option when you come to that request for support at the end of every story. Really folks, where did you learn your fundraising skills? I would gladly pay more for my monthly DK “subscription” than the $15 I pay for the NY Times, or the $20 I spend on Netflix. So I just added a second monthly $5 donation. Maybe tomorrow I’ll do another. It’s kind of an awkward way to manage this, but it works. If all of us who are regular readers and users would contribute what it’s worth to us, this labor/management dispute would be unnecessary.

Part of what it means to be a community is that we support the people who hold that community together. It’s kind of like paying taxes for the things we want out of government. We can write diaries and comments about which side we trust more or believe is being more reasonable, or we can address the actual cause of the dispute by kicking in a little more on a regular basis.
