Mainstream Media FINALLY Says Out Loud What We've Known For Decades [1]

The headline above will come as no surprise to any intellectually honest adult who’s ever had to witness the stream of political drivel flowing from Fox News while in the gym or other public places with TVs, but it’s good to finally see it happening. David Zurawik has written a decent take-down of the channel based on the recent testimony from Rupert Murdoch and revealed texts by the channel’s stars.
With a few notable exceptions, the part of the media world that has built its credibility by relentlessly going after the facts, has been reluctant to call out “one of its own”. I certainly hope this op-ed is not another one-off, but the beginning of a drum roll of backlash that begins to strip Fox News of its veneer of legitimacy in the public eye.
It could have been done 20 years ago just based on a simple analysis of their content that any high school forensics team could have done.
It should have been done 20 years ago because then there would have been less time for Fox to harden the hearts and minds of their viewers. Revelations like today’s may have been more likely to get viewers to wake up and realize they were being conned. But today, their viewers have had 30+ years of conditioning to shut out anything else. So much so that the biggest thing threatening the network would be not being dishonest enough.
So despite how plainly and clearly the truth has been revealed about Fox News’ intentions, it’s not likely to have a huge impact on its viewership and standing in the near term. What’s needed to have lasting, meaningful impact would be if, in its settlement with Dominion perhaps, the network were forced to openly recant the lies and apologize to its viewers. Of course, for the hard-core, they’ll just jump ship to the other fantasy right-wing networks, but at least there would finally be a public accounting for all the damage Fox has wrought on this country over its tenure. And perhaps it would serve as warning to the NewsMaxs and OANs out there to be more careful about what they say in the future.
Freedom of speech does not allow you to yell “Fire” in a crowded movie theater, and freedom of the press does not allow you to act with malice or print slander. Let’s hope that’s the real message being sent by the media starting with Zurawik’s essay.
