Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour, the place where politics meets up with religion, art, nature, food, and life. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three!), and join us.

My “farm” is more accurately described as a certified wildlife habitat. I will plant vegetables and grow nearly half my summer food, but I don’t plant much else that isn’t native to my area. Instead, I maintain a large pond, a large wooded area, a shortgrass prairie area, a scrub area (at the very back, about ¼ mile from my house), and then a one-acre lawn around the house, where I have my garden.

I’ve had some warm weather, some cooler weather, and some storms. I’m in the mood for starting my garden, but then looking ahead I see a few more nights in the teens about a week out. :::Sigh::: It’s almost time to start looking for the mushrooms, though. There’s a wide window when they appear. Some years it’s late March to early April, some years it’s early May. But the season only lasts for 7-10 days, so I can’t afford to miss it.

Other early plants (I know ‘shrooms aren’t plants) around my place:

Oh, yeah, the poison ivy comes up with the mushrooms. And it’s darned near impossible to eradicate. With the climate change, it’s been exploding all over the US, including all the shady areas here.

What are your first signs that winter is really over?
