Shivering, I climbed back into bed and quickly arranged the blankets around my body. As soon as I settled on my back, Freddie climbed up on top of me and laid down, tucking his paws under his chest. I immediately began petting him. “I bet my alarm is going to go off soon,” I whispered to him.
“That’s the buzzy thing you ignore every morning?” he wondered.
“Exactly.”
The grandfather clock downstairs chose that moment to declare the time. I counted the chimes and was delighted to only hear two. “Oh my god,” I told Freddie, happily. “I have hours still to sleep.”
“You should just sleep during the day,” he said, blinking down at me. “There’s no sunshine at night. You should be hunting right now.”
I shook my head. “We humans do our hunting during the day,” I explained. “And by ‘hunting’ I mean answering emails.”
“I answer to no one,” he declared.
“And the food just appears,” I agreed.
“I can’t sleep like this,” I told him. “I need to roll on my side.”
He closed his eyes and purred.
I gave a little laugh, then picked him up and moved him to the bed next to me. He gave a little squawk of outrage, but he was small so I ignored it.
As soon as I released him, he immediately moved to climb on top of me again. “Freddie, I need to roll over,” I said, gently stopping him with my arm.
He whined a little, but I quickly moved into my sleeping position before he could resume his place. I gave a happy sigh and closed my eyes.
“This does not work,” Freddie complained.
I felt him sniff my face and my shoulder. “Settle down,” I said. “It’s time to sleep.”
He ignored me, continuing his inspection. I opened my eyes. “Do you want under the blanket?” I asked, tentatively lifting it for him.
“No,” He said. I dropped it.
“It’s cold,” I observed. “You’d be warm under there.”
“You’ll make me warm,” he said, turning in a circle and slowly curling up in front of my face and chest.
Really. Slowly.
I sighed and lifted my arm out from under the blanket, wrapping it around his body and pulling him down against me. He tensed for a moment, then relaxed. He rested his head on my bicep. “Warm,” he murmured.
I woke up an unknown amount of time later, coughing a little. I had what felt like a mouthful of fur. “Aaaak!” I said, struggling to clear my mouth with the hand not pinned by Freddie’s sleep heavy body.
The loose fur sticking to my fingers made the task slightly difficult. “Gah!” I said.
Freddie turned his head and frowned at me. “Sleeping!” he complained.
“Gak!” I cried, rubbing my tongue on the outside of my wrist.
He heaved a long suffering sigh, and laid his head back down on my bicep.
Downstairs, the grandfather clock chimed six times.
“Ugh,” I said.
I had just fallen back into a light doze when the alarm went off.
“Just ignore it,” Freddie murmured.
I tapped the snooze. My body was a little sore from spending so much time in the same position. Being contorted around the big cat didn’t help. “ I need to move,” I said.
He gave a little snore.
I rolled to my back, dislodging and waking him. He stood and stretched, then plopped back down, curling up against my side.
“I should get up,” I told him.
“Warm,” he said, sleepily.
The alarm went off for the fourth time, and again I silenced it. Freddie rubbed his head against my hand and I dutifully petted him. “You’re going to make me late for work,” I said affectionately. “Again.”
“Hunt emails later,” he said.
Happy Caturday, Peeps! Freddie doesn’t always cuddle, but when he does it always feels special. Does your little fur ball like a snuggle at night?
