Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman did not mince his words at Alex Murdaugh's sentencing hearing. He made it clear that we have two systems of justice.
The sentencing Judge implies Alex Murdaugh received preferential treatment.

Circuit Court Judge Clifton Newman implied that Alex Murdaugh, his family, and other prosecutors would have selected the death penalty for the heinous crimes he committed. In effect, he made it clear the system was unjust.
"Explain to me what happened at that moment in time when they opted to pull the trigger," Judge Newman said, pointing out the heinous nature of the crime. " When they opted to commit the most heinous crime known to man, in this case, qualifies them. There are death penalty statutes based on the statute to the statutory aggravating circumstances of two or more people being murdered by the defendant and by one out or pursuant to one scheme or course of conduct."
The judge then claimed he was not questioning the prosecutor's decision not to go for the death penalty. Of course, he was.
"I don't question at all the decision of the state not to pursue the death penalty," The judge said. "But as I sit here in this courtroom and look around the many portraits of judges and other court officials and reflect on the fact that over the past century and your family, including you, have been prosecuting people here in this courtroom, and many have received the death penalty, probably for lesser conduct."
If that was not an admonishment to the criminal justice system, I don't know what would.
