Hubby was somewhat in despair about the garden toward the end of last year because of the proliferation of gophers. Being an easterner, I have little familiarity with gophers, but what we saw in cartoons is not far from the truth. They steal root crops and destroy trees and shrubs by eating the root underground. Hubby had taken a strategy of using a trap called the Gopher Hawk, and it has worked sometimes. but not consistently. So, he decided to hire a guy whose business is trapping and removing gophers. It took several visits (and a charge for each gopher), but the gophers were eradicated, and hubby was feeling quite satisfied. However, a month later, the gophers were back.

It was apparent to me that, since gophers are endemic to southern California, the removal of gophers from the property would have to be a continuous process, not something that can be done once and for all time. The garden is hubby’s project, but there’s only so much he’s capable of doing, so I volunteered to become the gopher wrangler, so to speak. So, tomorrow, the gopher trapper is coming to teach me how to do it. In the long run, it will be less expensive than calling him back to trap new gophers every month or so. I’m wondering if future gophers will tell horror stories about me to their children…
