It is a well known fact that missing and murdered black women don’t get all that much news coverage. This is also true of indigenous women, and the TV show Alaska Daily is calling attention to the problem.
After tonight’s episode, two of the show’s stars delivered a public service announcement and gave a link to a page on the ABC website explaining the problem.
ABC's drama "Alaska Daily" will have extensive content based on the real-world Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women crisis (MMIW). This crisis has enormous emotional impact upon the families and friends of those who have loved ones missing or murdered. - According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, murder is a leading cause of death for Native Women. - The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) found that more than four in five American Indian and Alaska Native women (84.3%) have experienced violence in their lifetime. - The National Crime Information Center reports that, in 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls—though the US Department of Justice's federal missing person database, NamUs, only logged 116 cases.
The page lists several resources.
The TV show is quite interesting per se. It was recommended to me in connection to Will Trent, which also airs on ABC. Alaska Daily airs at the same time as Law & Order: Criminal Intent over on NBC. But tonight’s Law & Order block was all reruns, so I figured I might as well switch over to ABC and give Alaska Daily a try.
Hilary Swank stars as Eileen Fitzgerald, a reporter at the Daily Alaskan and from what I gather a military veteran who served in Afghanistan (or maybe she was an embedded reporter, I’m not sure). Although the MMIW crisis is a big focus of the show, other topics relating to freedom of the press also come up.
In the episode that aired tonight, titled “Enemy of the People,” a right-wing terrorist radicalized by an irresponsible bloviator takes Fitzgerald hostage. She handles the situation with courage and compassion as her colleagues race against the clock to reach the terrorist.
Alaska Daily airs on Thursdays at 10 p.m. Eastern on ABC. Episodes are also available to stream on Hulu the day after first airing. Next week’s episode is also new. TV Guide doesn’t say anything else about it other than the title: “Tell a Reporter Not to Do Something and Suddenly It's a Party.”
