For Reasons, I usually listen to MSNBC evening shows the next morning (on TuneIn Radio). Being a Floridian, I very much enjoyed the segment on Chris Hayes from Tuesday evening’s broadcast showing Brian Kilmeade on Fox broadcasting live from a Florida diner.
The reason I enjoyed it so much was that Mr. Kilmeade did a whip round of “Who’s your man or woman for president 2024?” and turned out everyone he polled said Trump. Every. One. Even the last lady who said President DeSantis would be OK … too. As in, addition to Trump.
You can watch it yourself here, at the beginning of a The Young Turks segment:
I have to say I’m not particularly surprised, and of course as is noted on TYT program, this is just one small snapshot, just anecdotal evidence, can’t statistically be used to suggest the state as a whole overwhelmingly prefers Trump over DeSantis.
However …
It does suggest to me that my Theory is correct: That as long as there is an Original Recipe in the race, people are going to go for that, not any cheap knock off.
So if that is true, then the best course for DeSantis is to do whatever he can to get Trump OUT of the race. What would do that? How could that happen? Trump will, as far as I can tell, never drop out. So the only other thing I can think of is, get Trump’s butt in prison. But to do that, he’s got to be indicted first.
If I were DeSantis, that is the thing I would want the most, one (or more!) Trump indictments that happen within the next couple of months, ideally. Then DeSantis could announce his run, say how awfully Trump’s been treated, assuaging his base, and sail to the nomination.
Or so he might think. I can see several problems with even that scenario. For example, I doubt even indictment will keep Trump from running. I also question if DeSantis will be able to handle questions about Trump without pissing off his most fervent supporters. Heck, even the lady in the DeSantis T-shirt was wishy-washy on him.
Last year I was having a great visit with an old high school chum (from California), and she said she really did not like Trump anymore and was looking for someone like Trump but “without all the crazy” and suggested maybe that could be DeSantis. I said, no, DeSantis is a straight-up fascist. I’m not sure she believed me, but what he's done since certainly screams “I’m some sort of an authoritarian strongman”. The question is, will my friend think authoritarianism is ‘crazy’?
I think she will. But how many others won’t?
Anyway, that’s not really the point. The point is DeSantis has one hell of a needle to thread carefully ahead of him, and I don’t think he has the smarts to do it. Not to say he’s stupid (he’s not), but to take on Trump, one needs a level of cunning and subterfuge and “You needed to watch the British version of House of Cards much more studiously and taken notes” that I just don’t see DeSantis having.
So going along on this theme, enjoy the poll below. Very interested in hearing what you think about who Florida Republicans will prefer for their presidential candidate, and why.
