This week, a 65-page report released by BloombergNEF and the Business Council for Sustainable Energy contains good and bad news. The short version: sustainable energy continues to grow despite supply chain issues, inflation, and regulatory obstacles; the U.S. is behind when it comes to the Obama administration’s 2015 Paris emissions pledges.
The authors wrote: "While the downtick in emissions in 2020 offered a sliver of hope that the U.S. could honor its original Paris pledge, the sharp rebound in 2021 followed by 2022’s incremental year-on-year increase has set the country back from hitting its goals."
Ethan Zindler, head of Americas for BloombergNEF, told ClimateWire, “Everything has to continue to happen, but faster, if you want to actually address the climate crisis." That, of course, is the key objective of the unprecedented climate-related investments rolled out in the Inflation Reduction Act passed last August. But even its most avid backers agree that more than the IRA will be needed. And there are obstacles to achieving that known as congressional Republicans, 149 of whom have a record of rejecting what climate scientists are telling us.
