As Elon moves ever closer to strapping people into chairs to make them read his tweets it is maybe worth noting that many of us could increase our reach/ audience by much simpler means. Unless you have a large online following your own following and retweets are never going to reach many people. Equally, on Facepalm few accounts and pages will get much of an audience.
We can boost things a bit by replying to influencers’ new posts and there’s a lot to be said for doing that in support of politicians your support. However, to get into larger numbers its usually easiest to go to where sizeable audiences are waiting and where can you initiate the sharing of your content rather than hoping others might. Two examples of this are Subreddits and Facepalm groups where consistent post sharing gets results if the content makes for a good fit.
Does this definitely work . . . lot of posts/ shared posts don’t catch the eye, but half decent memes or posts sent to the right subreddit can consistently get you into the hundreds and thousands. On Facebook, it’s more ‘sky’s the limit’ but to avoid getting shares to groups blocked you need to share, wait an hour, share, wait an hour . . . and/ or coordinate sharing among a group.
What can you get done if you share consistently, Covid provides an example. At the time when it was declared Covid was here I among others could access about 300 groups with admins who considered us friendly contributors. Out of those about 70 were best suited to the task including a lot of Dem/ Resistance groups. By simply clicking away steadily it was straightforward to contribute to the following within a few days:
Opt-in Covid avoidance chart widely shared almost immediately.
Diagrammatic demonstration of effects of ventilation widely shared.
Proven vaccine info into COVID support groups and existing network.
Traffic calming in Covid support groups.
Teachers pooling and sharing resources in groups.
Listings of worthwhile online resources for teachers distributed.
Support and encouragement of health service professionals.
Actions and approaches for encouraging others to avoid Covid widely shared.
Covid avoidance memes pooled, distributed and shared.
Recommendations for and encouragement to explain avoidance to those reluctant or hostile.
Content consistent with on-going ‘facts matter’ content and standard fact checking.
With many groups and many shares the numbers always stack up but this particular exercise had the bonus of almost no negative feedback. Even anti-vaxxers tend to go quiet when looking at a pic of a room full of kids encased in metal by polio and we had the smallpox pics if we had to go there.
Does applying this to a set of groups individually work . . . it sure does and if sharing from a not necessarily busy or much liked Facepalm page you can see the numbers. (Reddit has figures for each post on the post). Sharing out won’t build your page much but that’s not the point when supporting groups.
Overall, if your social media accounts are doing what you want them to do there’s no reason to break what doesn’t need fixed. However, if it feels like you’re howling into the abyss then working out which accounts can get what kinds of results is a bit of a stake waiting to be plunge into a few online vampires’ hearts.
