Tour of the Ironworkers Training Facility in Tampa, FL

Hey DailyKOS!

A quick reminder for those who haven't read my blogs before:

I’m a former Title I elementary school teacher and neighborhood advocate who has been serving on Tampa City Council since my appointment nine months ago. My biggest accomplishments are doubling the city’s budget for affordable housing and stopping an unpopular, controversial water plan known as “toilet-to-tap” that’s drawn objections from groups ranging from the Sierra Club to the League of Women Voters. When SCOTUS handed down the Dobbs decision, I was the one who stood up to protect reproductive rights in this city .

Now I’m engaged in my first election against the establishment’s pick—whose family ties to the city administration put the very concept of accountability and checks & balances in jeopardy. Despite this, I’ve held my own, and it’s been a great month for us. Here’s my top five moments of January:

5. Getting the West Central Florida Labor Council (AFL-CIO) Endorsement & Touring Union Training Facilities

As a teacher, I was my school’s union representative—so earning the Labor Council nod means an incredible amount to me. I’m proud to have both approved a sizable raise for our city’s unionized workers and to have spent so much time with organized laborers spanning a wide range of industries. Our unions are building the backbone of the next generation of the American workforce, and I’m dedicated to ensuring that as our city grows, it’s built by union hands.

4. Meeting Community Members at Meet & Greet Events

We’ve had fantastic turnouts at our meet & greet events, which we’re holding in neighborhoods across the city. I’m so grateful for every resident who has come out to ask questions, learn more about what I’ve accomplished, and how they can contribute to or volunteer for my campaign.

3. Launching Our First Ad

We’ve been fostering dogs for the local beagle rescue for years, and we recently took in our 21st. Her name is Jelly, she’s a beagle/cattle dog mix, and she stars in our first ad! She wasn’t fond of the cameras or lights, but she was a perfect actress. Watch our ad here:

2. Broad Support at Our First Major Forum

I’m a long standing member of Tampa Tiger Bay Club, Tampa’s largest non-partisan political organization. I participated in their candidate forum this month, and after my introduction a substantial amount of the room erupted with cheers and applause. It gives me so much confidence to see how many friends and local leaders on both sides of the aisle are standing with me in this race.

1. Reaching Over 2,000 doors Knocked by 31 Volunteers

Our volunteers range from college students at USF and the University of Tampa to veteran neighborhood leaders, and they’ve been hard at work knocking on doors all over the city of Tampa. I serve in a city-wide seat, so it’s no easy task to get the word out about this election—but our team has stepped up to the plate. I’m grateful for every individual who has worked so hard to keep me on council—and I know we will crush that record next month!

If you want to support our campaign going into the last full month, here’s what you can do:
