(I had hoped to attach this to someone else’s blog posting here, as it’s a short story without much detail, but, having seen none, I’ve made an entry all its own)
When I saw that Tom Verlaine had died, it hit me a little hard. But Tom Verlaine and I weren’t friends, nor was I particularly drawn to his music. But Tom Verlaine the man? That’s another story.
In 1980, like a great many other young people who hoped to break into the NYC music scene, I moved here, and, thanks to contacts and luck, acquired an entertainment lawyer to represent me— Owen Epstein, who passed away years ago. After my first meeting with Epstein, I was surprised to receive a call at home later that day from another of his clients: Tom Verlaine. it seems Epstein had asked him to call me and inform me of what I might expect in the coming year, assuming dealings and interactions with my record label went well. He counseled discipline, patience and work on all I could control— band personnel, my own songwriting and after-hours behavior. He answered all the questions I had, which were few— I didn’t know then what I learned later over the years in ‘the school for fools’— experience.
We never met, Tom Verlaine and I, nor did we ever have occasion to speak again. But today I honor his generous spirit, and his kind help to a stranger.
Thank you, Tom Verlaine. Rest in peace.
