In 1931, a Belgian cosmologist named Georges Lemaître shocked the astronomy world. Perhaps, he reasoned in a provocative paper, our utterly massive cosmic expanse might've begun as a singular, teeny tiny point some 14 billion years ago. Yet, he continued, this point probably exploded, eventually stretching out into the ginormous realm we call the universe -- a realm that's still blowing up in every direction as though it were an unpoppable balloon. If this were true, it'd mean our universe didn't always exist. It'd mean it must've had a beginning. Sure enough, in 1965 -- a year before Lemaître's death -- scientists used the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation to finally put forth undeniable evidence of this theory. Today, we call it the Big Bang.

In his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Denmark supports the Black Sea export initiative and has joined the Grain from Ukraine program. “The fact that we have made substantial progress on food security proves that we can make progress on the other points of our Peace Formula as well,” Zelensky said. “Today, we discussed what exactly Denmark’s participation in the implementation of the points of the Peace Formula could be.” The initiative is a U.N.-backed deal signed in July by Ukraine, Russia, and Turkey to unblock Ukrainian grain exports amid Russia’s invasion of the country. The exports had been blocked by Russia’s armed forces.

France and Australia intend to produce several thousand artillery shells for Ukraine in a joint multi-million dollar project, French Defense Minister Sébastian Lecornu said on Jan. 30. “Several thousand 155-millimeter shells are going to be manufactured in common, with an unprecedented partnership between Australia and France,” Lecornu said during a joint meeting in Paris. Lecornu said French arms company Nexter will collaborate with Australian companies, which will provide powder for the shells.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for Israel and the Palestinians to take "urgent steps" to restore calm amid escalating violence. Speaking in Jerusalem, Mr Blinken reiterated US support for a two-state solution as "the best way" to bring security to the two sides. Israel's new government opposes the creation of a Palestinian state. The visit comes after two gun attacks by Palestinians in East Jerusalem at the weekend killed seven Israelis.

A sixth officer has been suspended amid an ongoing investigation into the death of Tyre Nichols, a Memphis Police spokesperson said. Preston Hemphill, 26, was one of the police officers who initially stopped Mr Nichols for an alleged traffic violation prior to his fatal beating. Five other officers have been fired and charged with second-degree murder. A lawyer for Mr Hemphill said the officer is cooperating with the investigation.

Jan 30 (Reuters) - A group of pro-Russian activists in Germany donated funds to a Russian army division fighting in Ukraine, and the money was used to purchase walkie-talkie radios, headphones and telephones, according to an officer in the division and messages from the group's organisers seen by Reuters. The couple at the centre of the group, Elena Kolbasnikova and Max Schlund, handed the sum of 500 euros ($540) to the officer in person late last year. Their messages show they knew the money paid for telecommunications equipment – despite European Union sanctions which restrict the supply of such gear to Russia's military.

LONDON, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened him with a missile strike during a phone call in the run up to the invasion of Ukraine, a charge denied by Moscow. Johnson, speaking to the BBC for a documentary, said the Russian leader had asked him about the prospects of Ukraine joining NATO, to which he had responded it would not be "for the foreseeable future".

A suspected suicide attack near a mosque in the city of Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan has left dozens of people dead and many more injured, local authorities said on Monday. Police and hospital officials said at least 59 people had lost their lives and some 150 were injured. The sensitivity of the location has caused the government to place the country on a heightened state of alert over terrorism. There are fears that the death toll will continue to rise as emergency services clear the rubble. Many of those taken to hospital were listed in "critical condition." "A portion of the building had collapsed and several people are believed to be under it," police official Sikandar Khan said told the Reuters news agency.

Voters in the Czech Republic have chosen Petr Pavel, a retired army general, as their next president. The 61-year-old Pavel, who until a few years ago was largely unknown to the Czech general public, swept to a clear and convincing victory over the weekend, garnering about 58% of all votes cast. Turnout in the election was a record 70%. His opponent, Andrej Babis, the 68-year-old populist billionaire, former prime minister and head of the opposition Action of Dissatisfied Citizens (ANO) party, managed just 42%. After the first round, both candidates had been neck and neck. Before the collapse of communism in 1989, Pavel was a member of the Communist Party — like most professional soldiers in the former Czechoslovakia at the time. He also underwent military intelligence training while serving in the Czechoslovak army.

A dementia home care agency spent as little as three and a half minutes on taxpayer-funded care visits and filed records claiming far more care was given, according to evidence seen by the Guardian. The hasty care was exposed by Susan Beswick’s family, who called it “totally inadequate”. They say they had been told visits to 78-year-old Beswick, who has Alzheimer’s disease, were supposed to last 30 or 45 minutes. Across nine visits this month, care workers formally logged close to six hours of care. But security cameras suggest they were in the house for under one hour 20 minutes – less than nine minutes a visit on average.

Strikes by teachers in England and Wales will go ahead this week after last-ditch talks between union leaders and the government broke up without any progress. Teaching union leaders accused the education secretary, Gillian Keegan, of squandering the opportunity to avert strike action as they emerged from talks at the Department for Education on Monday. Members of the National Education Union (NEU) will walk out on Wednesday, in the first of seven days of strike action that is expected to affect tens of thousands of schools and potentially millions of pupils.

A Connecticut restaurant has been forced to defend itself in the face of conservative anger over its name: “Woke”. The owner of the newly opened restaurant, Carmen Quiroga, said she had intended to communicate “Wake up and have a coffee” when she named her business in Coventry, Connecticut. The US justice department told top House judiciary committee Republicans on Monday that it would decline to produce confidential information about the special counsel investigation into the recent discovery of classified-marked documents at Joe Biden’s personal home and office. The department said in a letter to the committee reviewed by the Guardian that it would not provide details about the president’s documents case – or any other inquiry – because it could reveal the roadmap of the investigation and risk the appearance of political conflict.

An unarmed Black man dies after a videotaped beating by police. The officers involved are fired. After a thorough review of the evidence, criminal charges are swiftly filed against the offending officers. Investigation, accountability and charges. This is often the most Black citizens in the United States can hope for as deaths at the hands of police continue. Across the country, police have killed roughly three people per day consistently since 2020, according to academics and advocates for police reform who track such deaths.

All countries remain “dangerously unprepared” for the next pandemic, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has warned, saying future health crises could also collide with increasingly likely climate-related disasters. Despite three “brutal” years of the COVID-19 pandemic, strong preparedness systems are “severely lacking”, the IFRC said in its World Disasters Report 2022, published on Monday. It called on countries to update their preparedness plans by year’s end.
