David DePape, the man who insert mandatory adverb allegedly attacked the husband of the Speaker of the House, appears to have a reasonably good public defender in Adam Lipson. On Friday afternoon, Lipson released a statement decrying the publication of the police bodycam footage of DePape in the Pelosi home, suggesting the release could affect his client’s right to a fair trial. Smart move for his lawyer.

Hours after Lipson’s statement, DePape himself called KTVU reporter Amber Lee to helpfully explain his motives for the attack and his profound regret that he did such a bad job. No, really.

Lee had reached out to DePape last October after the suspect’s arrest. DePape responded with a prepared statement and refused to answer follow-up questions, saying he did not want to jeopardize his case.

That caution was not in evidence Friday when DePape called Lee unbidden and stated he’d gone after Pelosi because people’s liberties were under attack, and that those attacking

"have names and addresses, so I got their names and addresses so I could pay them a little visit…have a heart to heart chat about their bad behavior."

DePape also expressed regret that he wasn’t well-prepared for the attack and that he was “so sorry I didn't get more of them.”

And that, dear perpetrators, is why your lawyer drinks.
